Trash and Recycling

Trash

All garbage will be picked up on Wednesdays in Locust Point. Unless you’ve opted out of the city trash can program, trash should be placed in the city-issued green trash receptacles.

Depending on where you live, trash may be collected in front of your home or from the alley. It is against City Ordinance not to keep your garbage in a properly sealed trash can container. Trash cans should be put out before 7:00 am on Wednesday.

Recycling

Locust Point recycling pickup is each Friday morning!

When you recycle, it helps to protect Baltimore City’s environment and our region by reducing trash, preventing pollution, decreasing emissions of greenhouse gases that affect our climate, and reducing the number of items that are dumped into our landfills or would need to be incinerated.

Recycle in 3 easy steps:

1. Use any container you want: paper bags, cardboard boxes, old laundry baskets – you can even use a trash can (just mark it “recycling”). There is only one rule: Do not place recycling in plastic bags!
2. Fill your container with any of the approved recycling materials: paper, cans, cardboard bottles, etc.
3. Put out all of the recycling that you want curbside or take it to one of DPW Citizens’ Convenience Drop-Off Centers; there is no limit! If your collection day falls on a holiday, please hold your recycling items until the makeup collection day which will most often be the following  Saturday.

Recycling Do’s & Don’ts

The biggest recycling contamination challenge for Baltimore is disposing of plastic bags, films and wraps in the cart or placing plastic bags filled with recycling out for collection. Contaminated recycling increases the City’s recycling processing costs and can cause equipment jams at recycling processing facilities, creating hazards for recycling facility workers. Additional sources of contamination include clamshell containers, Styrofoam, and bottles and jars that are not empty or clean, tanglers (i.e., electrical cords, hoses, Christmas lights), and clothing.

When preparing recycling for collection, residents are reminded to:
  • Place clean and empty recyclables in the cart
  • Leave recyclables loose in the cart
  • Do not bag items

To make sure the right items are placed in recycling carts, residents are encouraged to review the DPW recycling guide and the  Recycle Right web feature.

How to Recycle Electronics

Many common electronics can be recycled, reused, refurbished, or donated. These can include phones, computers, televisions, speakers and more. Donating or recycling electronic devices helps conserve resources and natural materials.

Maryland legislation requires Certified Electronic Device (CED) distributors to provide take-back programs that will recycle electronic devices for free. Check out the current list of manufacturers registered to sell products in Maryland and have a take back program for their products. Additionally, some companies have independent recycling programs.

DPW offers electronic recycling at Residential Drop-Off Centers. A variety of electronics are accepted such as gaming consoles, copy machines, docking stations etc. Please note these electronic items are NOT to be set out for curbside collection!

Visit DPW’s Recycling Services page for more information and FAQs.

LPCA Baltimore Compost Collective

The LPCA is partnering with the Baltimore Compost Collective (BCC) on a program to increase composting in Locust Point. The BCC is a local service that collects food scraps from residences in Baltimore neighborhoods and composts the material at the Filbert Street Community Garden in Curtis Bay, where it is used to grow fresh produce and build urban food security. They also have a youth entrepreneurship program that employs local teenagers and trains them in workforce skills, food access programming and community-scale composting.

The LPCA is offering to cover one month of BCC services for free ($25 value) for each LPCA member!

How to join:

1.  Sign up for Compost Service
2. Wait for the BCC to deliver a composting bucket to your house
3. Once your bucket is delivered, complete the sign-up process by registering for service on the BCC website. You will receive a reminder email from BCC to do this. The service is $25/month after your first month.

If you are not an LPCA member, you may join here. Questions? Contact Dave Arndt  or Marvin Hayes.
